AI consulting vs. doing it yourself: how to decide
Do it yourself when the task is simple and lives in one tool; hire help when a workflow spans several tools, touches customers or money, or when your team needs training to actually adopt it.
You don't always need a consultant. Plenty of useful AI work can be done by anyone with an afternoon and a clear goal. Here's how to tell the difference.
Do it yourself when
- The job lives in one tool, like drafting emails or summarizing documents.
- Mistakes are cheap and easy to catch.
- You're the only person who needs to use it.
Hire help when
- The workflow moves information between several tools, like calls to CRM to email.
- It touches customers, money or sensitive data, so it needs approvals and limits.
- A whole team needs to adopt it, which takes training, documentation and follow-through.
- You've tried a few tools and nothing stuck.
What to ask before you hire anyone
- Can you describe the workflow in one sentence?. What comes in, what gets done, where it goes. Vague answers mean vague results.
- Will it run on tools we already use?. New software adds cost and another thing to learn.
- Where does a person approve things?. Anything customer-facing should have a clear review step.
- What happens after launch?. Ask about training, documentation and who fixes it when something changes.
- Do you use this yourselves?. The best builders run their own business on the systems they sell.
